ASTALDI NEW CONTRACT IN POLAND: GROUP TO BUILD A NEW LOT OF THE WARSAW METRO

The Astaldi Group has been awarded a EUR 209 million contract to extend Line 2 of the Warsaw metro in Poland. This comes on the heels of Astaldi’s construction of the same line’s central section, a work the Group completed in March 2015.

The new contract calls for the executive design and the construction of the route’s eastern section for a total of approximately 3 kilometres, from the Dworzec Wileński Station to the stabling tracks past Station C-18, featuring twin-tube tunnels and 3 underground stations.  The tunnels are to be excavated using the two TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines) that have already been employed for the boring of the first section of the line, which allow the tunnels to be bored even as they are equipped for the passage of trains.  The contract also calls for building the link with the line’s central section, as well as the civil and railway systems, superstructure, and all related works. The works are planned to be completed in 36 months, beginning in early 2016.

The works are commissioned by Metro Warszawskie Sp.z o.o., the public company in charge of the operation of the underground of the Polish city on behalf of the Municipality of Warsaw.  The works will be financed with European funds and through the local budget.

Winning this new project confirms yet again the Astaldi Group’s experience in transport infrastructure – a field in which it currently ranks among the world’s top-ten Contractors given the revenue generated in the underground segment.  The new project also raises the Group’s standing in Poland, where it is currently engaged in building the John Paul II International Airport Kraków–Balice, about 60 kilometres of motorway (major sections of the S-5 and S-8 and the Warsaw bypass road), 2 railway sections (Łodz Fabryczna Station and Kraków–Balice link), as well as the Bydgoszcz-Torun waste-to-energy plant.
